Every person experiences that time in their life when they walk down that dark road, not knowing where it leads to. Some decide to continue down that road being engulfed in the tangle of struggle and despair, which might bring out that evil from inside of them. But then, others find their way out of their jungle and find light and clarity. In the book Lord of the Flies by William Golding, and in the poem ¨We Grow Accustomed to the Dark by Emily Dickinson they both use point of view, symbols, and character transformation to express how they view the dark side of human nature.

To begin with their point of view is different. Golding uses 3rd omniscient to show you how the boys are changing both from inside of them and by their actions, as Dickinson uses a 1st person and 3rd limited to show that everyone goes through the darkness but only the bravest overcome it. As the stories progresses both authors portray their characters changing with events happening. In the book the boys start to change as order and rescue become less and less of a chance. Their inner darkness starts to be displayed and you are able to see how darkness changes them. The savage’s darkness starts to settle in the first time that they went hunting as this foreshadows their later malicious act of hunting and killing Ralph’s tribe. Although the savages are not the only ones to change as the darkness starts to affect Ralph not in his evil deeds but in his mind with his short term memory quickly fading. Although Dickinson leads to a little happier of a path she comes up with the same conclusion in the poem. Her character in the poem goes from a familiar path into the darkness when then she states that you had to choose whether to become brave and overcome it, or let it overcome it.
