In the present day, we would value Theseus’s traits because he thinks and acts a lot like us. Theseus is one who thinks deeply about a problem and solve it. As stated in the book: “Theseus, the thinker” (Hamilton 231). One trait of his that we value is his intelligence. An example of when Theseus used his intelligence was when he returned back to Athens from the labyrinth. When Theseus set sail for the labyrinth, he said he would hoist a black flag if he was dead and a white flag if he was a live on his way back. This would be used to help the King Aegeus know if he successfully returned from killing the minotaur. Theseus did indeed return, but didn’t hoist the white flag on his way back. He immediately resigned his position because he had a better idea. He didn’t want to rule the people of Athens, he wanted everyone to vote for changes. He wanted everything to be organized. He did, however, assign himself to the role of being Commander in Chief. This event shows that Theseus was intelligent because he didn’t want to use a system that was flawed. He wanted to give the right to the people and the society itself to vote and make changes. We would value this trait because it’s a lot like our government system. They had met while on the Calydonian hunt. Pirithoüs had found out that Theseus was pursuing him and immediately reacted on an impulse. He was intimidated by Theseus and said that he would do anything that Theseus told him to do. Theseus replied back and he said that he only wanted to be friends with Pirithoüs.
