Samurai Rising by Pamela S. Turner is about the war in 12th century Japan fought between the Minamoto and Taira clans. When Yoritomo of the Minamoto Clan rebels against the ruling Taira, he places Yoshitsune in charge of the Minamoto army. Yoshitsune then attacks the Taira, eventually defeating them. Once he returns to his home, Yoritomo starts a smear campaign against Yoshitsune. Later, Yoritomo orders the samurai to kill Yoshitsune. These samurai end up chasing Yoshitsune around Japan; and in fear of being captured by the samurai, Yoshitsune commits suicide by seppuku. In Samurai Rising, the characters introduce many of the major themes or topics through their wartime actions. The importance of honor in Japan is a primary theme. This book …show more content…

The scriptures about Ichi No Tani mention how the battle was fought at a Taira fortress on the beach wedged between mountains and the ocean. In addition, the scriptures state that there was a small band of 100 or so men that went with Yoshitsune who attacked from the mountain and the other 3000 of his soldiers stormed the fortress head-on. Tapestries and drawings from the time depict ruined villas and fortresses with Yoshitsune and his men galloping onwards as the Taira soldiers board ships and retreat. Other pictures depict a fortress directly next to a mountain with horsemen galloping down into the fortress, while the vast majority of the soldiers are fighting each other on the beach. There is a large-scale war fought between the Minamoto and the Taira, which is the main conflict of the book. More broad details such as where battles took place, major characters and rulers of Japan from that time are included in both the research and book. The information is reliable because Dieter Wanczura, a seller of historical Japanese prints wrote about these battles in the description of historical Japanese prints. More minor details are included as well. For example, The author mentions Antoku, the false Taira emperor, who dropped a sword in the ocean, which was a very minor real-life event and it had essentially no impact on the story, however, the author wanted to remain true to what happened. This event makes virtually no difference whatsoever to the themes and topics of the story, but the author preserved the story as much as possible and referencing Antoku’s sword is a testament to
