James Truslow Adams invented the “American Dream” in 1931. He was referring to “That dream of a land in when life should be better and richer and fuller for everyone, with opportunity for each according to his ability or achievement.” James Adams is right, but my definition is a little different. The American Dream to me is accomplishing your goal in life and getting a great education. People tend to think that if their education isn’t great, or that they don’t have a goal set, then they won’t go anywhere in life. That’s the great thing about the American Dream, one does not need to have a goal set when they are a child; they can be thirty years old and decide what to do. The American Dream is still alive and possible, people just have to work hard, even harder today, to get to it.
It is still possible since people have a certain goal in life, whether it be a career goal or a financial one, and they have achieved it with hard work. In the collection of essays, “They Lived the Dream” Dan Rather told us about Curtis Atkins. Curtis Atkins went through high school and five semesters of college without knowing how to read. When Atkins was twenty-six, he finally asked for help. Dan Rather told us that Atkins stated his tutors did not only change his life, but saved it too. Atkins made his own cooking produce company and became a food columnist. Today, he has three cookbooks and appears on “Calling All Cooks” on the Food Network channel. Atkins stated, “I’m still trying to obtain the American Dream, because I want to give everyone the ability to read” (45).
