In Brain Birds: Amazing Crows and Ravens and in A Soft Spot for Crows the authors Terry Krautwurst and David Shaw both seem to have a positive views on Crows. Terry never tries to make them look bad or says anything that would hint at him despising them. Instead he present information while showing that they aren 't so bad after all. In the text it states, “ Like all families, they have their faults. But I think you will like them anyway,” (paragraph 1).
A significant motif of The Painted Bird is the comparison between the primitive aspects that the boy experiences in the countryside that contrast his upbringing in civilization. The child’s strongest memory of his past life is his “appendix operation when [he] was only four years old” (Kosinski 10). There he had access to modern medicine and recalls “the glossy hospital floors, the gas mask doctors placed on my face” (Kosinski 10). This directly contrasts with his experiences in village life. During his time with the village healer, Olga, the boy witnesses the many rituals she uses to heal people.
One of this week’s readings focused on Ch. 5, “Caged Birds,” in Professor Lytle Hernandez’s book City of Inmates: Conquest, Rebellion, and the Rise of Human Caging in Los Angeles, 1771-1965, and this chapter was particularly interesting because it further explained the development of immigration control in the United States. As a continuation from the last chapter, there was a huge emphasis in the Chinese Exclusion Act of 1882 and the Geary Act of 1892. This essentially prohibited Chinese laborers from immigrating to the United States, as well as eventually requiring these people to comply with regulations. “Caged Birds” encapsulates the events afterwards, as the book heads well into the early-1900’s. The disenfranchisement of immigrants develops towards further exclusivity because “[by] 1917, Congress had banned all Asian immigration to the Unites States and also categorically prohibited all prostitutes, convicts, anarchists, epileptics, ‘lunatics,’ ‘
The romantic characteristics of strong sensory, and showing the parallels of humans and nature, are shown in both Poe and Bryant’s pieces of literature. Exhibiting the comparisons between man and nature is a very common romantic characteristic. Along with providing the reader with an image of the scene is crucial for understanding of the literature. Both writers provide numerous scenes containing detailed descriptions of nature and the connection humans have with
The school name to be Abraham Lincoln High school. It should be this because he was one of the most influential men in history, because he freed the slaves, and won the Civil War. I think the mascot should be a Bald Eagle, because it is a symbol of American freedom and democracy. It is a symbol of hope and freedom to the whole world. I think names and mascots are important to the students because it is a unifying thing they can all rally behind at ballgames and when they interact with other schools.
Imagery and tone plays a huge role for the author in this poem. It’s in every stanza and line in this poem. The tone is very passionate, joyful and tranquil.
The agony the writer is feeling about his son 's death, as well as the hint of optimism through planting the tree is powerfully depicted through the devices of diction and imagery throughout the poem. In the first stanza the speaker describes the setting when planting the Sequoia; “Rain blacked the horizon, but cold winds kept it over the Pacific, / And the sky above us stayed the dull gray.” The speaker uses a lexicon of words such as “blackened”, “cold” and “dull gray” which all introduce a harsh and sorrowful tone to the poem. Pathetic fallacy is also used through the imagery of nature;
Kate Chopin’s novel, The Awakening opens with a scene of two birds, emphasizing that the motif of birds later within the novel will play an important part with setting the constant metaphor they bring. Throughout the whole novel the motif of birds is a metaphor for the Victorian women during that period -- caged birds serve as reminders of Edna’s entrapment and the entrapment of Victorian women in general. Edna makes many attempts to escape her cage (husband, children, and society), but her efforts only take her into other cages, such as the pigeon house. Edna views this new home as a sign of her independence, but the pigeon house represents her inability to remove herself from her former life, due to the move being just “two steps away” (122).
In the first stanza’s, the narrator’s voice and perspective is more collective and unreliable, as in “they told me”, but nonetheless the references to the “sea’s edge” and “sea-wet shell” remain constant. Later on the poem, this voice matures, as the “cadence of the trees” and the “quick of autumn grasses” symbolize the continuum of life and death, highlighting to the reader the inevitable cycle of time. The relationship that Harwood has between the landscape and her memories allows for her to delve deeper into her own life and access these thoughts, describing the singular moments of human activity and our cultural values that imbue themselves into landscapes. In the poem’s final stanza, the link back to the narrator lying “secure in her father’s arms” similar to the initial memory gives the poem a similar cyclical structure, as Harwood in her moment of death finds comfort in these memories of nature. The water motif reemerges in the poem’s final lines, as “peace of this day will shine/like light on the face of the waters.”

The author of “All Five of Us” portrays an intense yearning for freedom. Beginning by showcasing a noisy, suffocating tone that transitions into a thrilling, adventurous tone, with uses of lightness and darkness. The author of “All Five of Us” conveys spiritual confinement/depression within the darkness, and the found freedom in viewing the light. Spiritual depression is apparent within the first stanza, “like a crowded apartment building” (3), conveys the author’s mind to be in constant state of motion, never ceasing.

In the story, “on Birds, Bird Watching and Jazz” by Ellison, the interesting theory as to how Charles Porter Jr. got his nickname as “Bird “ is told using humor in his stories along with a careful choice of syntax and his diction. In the first paragraph, the author uses alliteration,”...and despite the crabbed and constricted character…” to give us an insight on the figure he is speaking about. The author also chooses these words to build up an impression and then breaks it by saying Parker was a most intensive melodist. In the second paragraph of this story, Ellison establishes what a nickname does and how it would originate. Continuing on, Ellison introduces a new fact to the audience, that jazzmen were labeled as cats because they were legends.
“The Raven” by Edgar Allen Poe is a poem published in January of 1845, that has been read for over a hundred years. One reason this poem is particularly popular is because of the story behind it. A mysterious and possibly supernatural raven comes to a distraught man who is slowly slipping into madness. The detail in this poem pulls people into the story. Poe uses lots of symbolism in this poem and the biggest symbol is the raven itself.

Poets, artists, writers, and philosophers all believe the natural world can provide healthy emotions and morals. William Wordsworth, a notorious Romantic poet, circles many of his poems around nature and its power including his “The World is Too Much With Us” and “I Wandered Lonely as a Cloud.”
Romanticism and Nature Topic chosen for my research is based on romanticism and nature. Romanticism and nature are almost of same meaning to each other. Romanticism (also the romantic era or the Romantic period) was an artistic, literary, and intellectual movement that originated in Europe towards the end of 18th century and in most areas was at its peak in the approximate period from 1800 to 1850. To set a typical example we can take it as romantic lyric which suggest a mystical relationship with nature. Many romantic poets has its ability to connect romanticism with nature through their expression of love, imagination and his experience in a natural setting to go beyond his/her everyday life.
