Thomas Alva Edison, most famously known for making improvements to the electric light bulb. Thomas Alva Edison was born in Milan, Ohio on February 11, 1847, as the seventh and final child of Samuel and Nancy Edison. When Thomas was seven he moved to Port Huron, Michigan. In Port Huron, Edison grew up and was taught reading, writing, and arithmetic skills by his mother. When he was thirteen he took a job as a newspaper and candy seller on a train that traveled from Detroit to Port Huron and back. When he got a break or had free time he read technical and scientific discoveries. From this, he learned how to operate a telegraph. When Edison was 16, he became a full-time telegrapher and earned enough money to move to Boston at age 21. There he became an inventor and had his first patent on the electric vote recorder. Unfortunately, this invention wasn’t popular and Edison gave up on it. When Edison was 22 he moved to New York. His first successful invention in New York was the universal stock printer. After the success of this product, Edison built a laboratory and factory in nearby Newark, New Jersey.
