The Relationship Between God and Happiness Thomas Aquinas was not only a saint in the Catholic Church, but also one of the most influential philosophers that taught about God in the Medieval Ages. During this time period, the main philosophical focus was on happiness and how it is best achieved. His teachings about true happiness and the role that God plays in it continues to be studied by students and philosophers today. His main points were that happiness comes from knowledge and contemplation of God, and the cardinal virtues and theological virtues. Aquinas’ first teaching was that knowledge of God and contemplation are the best things for mankind. The cardinal virtues entail prudence, justice, temperance, and fortitude. Aquinas believed that these particular virtues were necessary for natural happiness. The theological virtues include faith, hope, and charity. He taught that these virtues were necessary for supernatural happiness. Achieving these seven virtues takes both outward and inward actions that display a love for God and His people. I agree with Thomas Aquinas to a certain extent on the idea that knowledge and contemplation of God lead to perfect happiness. Though I believe that it is good works and faith in God that lead to perfect happiness, in order to do these things one must have knowledge of God. This comes from reading the Holy Scriptures, praying to God, and listening for personal revelation. I also agree in Aquinas’ teaching that perfect happiness does not occur during this life. I believe that final and perfect happiness are achieved in the Celestial Kingdom, living with God and my eternal
