“Nothing can stop the man with the right mental attitude from achieving his goal; nothing on earth can help the man with the wrong mental attitude.” (Thomas Jefferson) Thomas Jefferson was an exceptionally successful and influential as a president. Thomas Jefferson was the third President of the United States. Before he became president he was a writer and a Lawyer. He also served in the Continental congress as the Representative of Virginia. While on congress Jefferson and four other men were asked to write up the Declaration of Independence, Jefferson was the main author for the document he spent seventeen straight-days working on the Declaration of Independence. He had a plan to make the United States better then when he started. He had new ideas for the Economic policy, domestic policy, and foreign policy. Jefferson tried to look at Domestic affairs in a different way. The first thing Jefferson wanted to do was create a “wise and frugal Government, which shall restrain men from injuring one another” (Jefferson-Miller Center.) Jefferson wanted a government that would “respect the authority of the individual states, operate with smaller bureaucracy, and cut its debts.” (Miller Center) Jefferson pressured congress to abolish the direct tax of 1798 and to repeal the Alien and Sedition acts. Jefferson wanted to emphasize his opposition to the acts so he pardoned the 10 victims of the people who broke those laws that were still in prison. President Jefferson had new ideas for the economic policy. He wanted America to make the most money off of agriculture. He wanted the Americans to make their own clothes and be known for it. He was generally a thrifty man. He wanted America to be a strong independent nation. He wanted to make sure America was self-sufficient. He wrote the Declaration of Independence, which stated everything that he felt about what King George had done to them in the past. He puts it in writing that America will not be part of the British rule anymore. He helps make the change. The Declaration of Independence is not only about how all men are created equally, it is about standing up to the British government and freeing us from their rule. Jefferson by writing this frees us all from all the laws they created for us. For example “He has obstructed the administration of Justice”, “Imposed taxes without our consent”, “Suspended our own Legislatures”, and “quartering large bodies of armed troops among us.” (Declaration of Independence) He helped us become an independent nation because he was so unhappy with how the past turned
