Olaudah Equiano and Fredrick Bruce Thomas were different but similar in many ways. They both faced many difficulties and had to overcome obstacles to become successful businessmen. They failed to overcome certain obstacles, but that did stop them from trying to succeed. They lived very differently from one another which also led them to both have success in a business aspect as well. To be able to compare and contrast these men, both of their stories need to be told to understand how these men succeeded and at times, failed.
Dr. Doodley hypothesized that fast music would enhance people’s work performance. To test her hypothesis, she chose two different secretarial pools and chose to control what speed of music they would be working with, making that the independent variable, while the dependent variable is the performance of the groups based on the type of music they listened to while working. Based on the experiment’s purpose, the experimental group is the pool exposed to fast music. In which case, the control group would be the pool exposed to slow music. The control group used for the experiment was not appropriate, because there was a malfunction with the tape.

In 1971 a psychologist named Philip Zimbardo decided to make an experiment about the people in the prisons. How people react in the prisons and how they react in these situations. Zimbardo wants to check the human behaviors in these conditions. To perform this experiment basement of Standford University was available and twenty four students were hired to perform the role of the guards and prisoners. Milgram’s experiment, and the two prison experiments both prove the effect of group hysteria on one’s decision making. In the Milgram experiment, it was discovered that 65% of the participants continued to the maximum voltage. When the first person continued to the maximum voltage, it was discovered that 90% of the remaining participants would continue to maximum voltage (Milgram video), which proves how group hysteria affects a person’s decision making. In the prison experiments, it was the group hysteria that provoked the guards to cumulatively harass the the prisoners. It was the group hysteria that diluted any opposition towards the inhumane practices of the guards.

There are many ways to find out how individuals would react in certain situations, for example, by putting individuals in a simulation. Causing stress and discomfort to individuals in order to gain knowledge is at times necessary. The participants were told that they would be teaching other participants to memorize a pair of words. They believed that this was an experiment that was being conducted to measure the effect that punishment has on learning, because of this they were told they had to electric shock the learner every time that they answered a question wrong. The experiment then sought out to measure with what willingness the participants obeyed the authority figure, even when they were instructed to commit actions which they seemed uncomfortable with.
