Materialism is very common around the world, especially in the United States, where people have always had this desire to acquire more ever since Columbus. There are many positive and negative aspects to this, such as it can lead it a person's unhappiness, but at the same time can make someone extremely happy. Acquiring more can lead to a loss of quality time with family members and a feeling continuously unsatisfied, however it provides many good memories providing happiness and fills the person's life with gratitude for what they have. One of the many cause to someone's obsessions with to materialism is music, specifically rap music. Which is one of “three deadly sins which are violence and misogyny and materialism.”(Yates). For example if someone only has one type of shoe but needs a certain type of shoe to run in then that person would become unsatisfied because my needs are not met.
This unhappiness and continuous feeling of unsatisfactory leads that person to work harder in order to get money to buy more things. “Today, parents work longer hours, leaving less time for home life. As a result, both marriages and parent-children relationships suffer” (Dalton). This also affects that person's children because it is crucial for children to have both parents in order to grow and learn right from wrong. If a parent is not there to help guide them that child will be lost and not know what they are supposed to be doing with that person lives.
In contrary to this materialism can also make a person very happy. Being materialistic can bring them back to a certain memory that they had in the past. For example, “If the person opted to get concert tickets instead, they will experience an intense thrill for the night of the event but it will disappear once the event ends, simply leaving a happy memory” (Depra). If a person doesn't have anything that brings them back to a happy memory then it would be hard for that person to find something that makes them happy when they are
