With all my sisters being so close in age, it was difficult not to be competitive with each other. Growing up with seven sisters and four brothers, myself being the second to youngest, was rough because I felt like I had to be either equal or better than they were in almost everything. Having them as siblings made me work harder to get what I wanted. My three sisters are exactly a year apart from each other. The oldest sister is Sophia; then there’s Charmayne, and then Felice. They were always on varsity in all sports. When they would come home, they would make me play volleyball with them. Well, I used to think I was. My sisters would stay after practice with me and help me with some passing drills. After hours and hours of practice, the head coach of the volleyball team pulled me aside and told me that I was going to be playing varsity. I was the only thirteen-year-old who was going to be playing with seventeen- and eighteen-year-olds. The next day when I had to practice with the varsity team, my sisters were very upset that I was on varsity and thought I didn’t deserve to be on varsity with them. My palms were so sweaty, my breathing was uncontrollable, and I couldn’t concentrate on anything. We all stood in our lineup with Sophia to my right and Felice to my left. Right before the referee blew the whistle, Felice came up to me and said, “The only wrong thing you can do is not touch the ball,” which gave me confidence in myself. As the first ball was served, I could see that is was coming straight for me. I took a deep breath, put my arms out and got a straight platform, and took a step back to make the perfect pass to my sister Felice. After that, every ball that came to me, I tried my best. That was good enough for the team and the coach. After the game the coach told me that I could use some work but other than that, that was my spot for the rest of the
