The article “Time to Think Bigger About the Refugee Crisis” written by Bono, lead singer of the band U2, and published on The New York Times on April 12, 2016 is about the ongoing Syrian refugee crisis, the way the world is dealing with it and what could be done better.
According to Bono, the EU and other developed countries have realized that they have responsibility in forced mass migrations due to violence, poverty and instability and that these events are not just Middle Eastern or African problem. Despite being the largest humanitarian crisis since World War II, the people fleeing from Syria have not completely lost hope however the solutions designed by the EU to manage the situation are disrupting this feeling. The goal of this essay is to present four possibilities that could be used to manage the refugee crisis that will bring benefits to the refugee and their hosting country’s economy.
The first action that can be taken to enable refugees to be a useful resource is creating an enabling environment. This mean that the migrant should have the right to work and freedom of movement because its status does not block or exempt his ability to work and create wealth to sustain himself and the country which has given him asylum. An investment in giving a job to migrants allows the country to fill non-appealing jobs and at the same time prevents marginalization leading to criminality. This would allow the migrant to reach the desired country by plane, without starting a dangerous journey through war zones, countries that does not allow them to pass and the possibility to remain stuck in camps forever. Human traffickers would not be an issue to solve anymore because the migrants use the money that would have given to them to simply buy a plane ticket for their final destination. Prevent uncontrolled flux of migrants through European frontiers gives the impression that the crisis is well-managed and this will be a setback for all those states or xenophobic movements which want to build barriers and walls along their country’s
