In my opinion, Tita is not a strong character. In fact, it seems like she is the most emotionally vulnerable of all the characters shown so far. From what we’ve read so far, the problems in the story mostly come from Tita not being able to control her emotions which also leads to her powers to manifesting. From the cake of depression to the aphrodisiac quail dish, the complications that happen after consuming it are because of Tita and her emotions. Her character so far does not seem so strong.
We see most of Tita’s emotions when she and Nacha were making the wedding cake for Rosaura and Pedro. As she is preparing the cake, we see her become very anguished to the point where it affects her cooking. On the contrary, we can see how extremely vulnerably she is, and her power reflects that. Another event that shows her emotions going haywire is the when the family eats her quail in rose petal sauce recipe. Instead of her dish being filled with sadness, this time it is filled with her arousal. The book describes the effects by saying “[Gertudis]’s body was giving off so much heat that the wooden walls began to split and burst into flame” (Esquirel 54). Now while this might seem like metaphor for horniness, this was quite literal. Tita’s love and arousal for Pedro was so strong that it caused Gertudis’s body to be on fire after eating her meal. To further explain my visions, what I believe to be a weakness in Tita’s character is her inability to control her emotions and powers. Because of the dish, Gertudis’s life was ruined, she could no longer live normally, and her reputation was tarnished. She didn’t wish for this to happen. I was all because of Tita’s incapacity to keep her emotions in check. I believe this to be a major gap to her
