Higher Education Policy in the Trump Administration
Higher education has had many changes during the past year. The shift in the direction of higher education is due to the new administration. With the Trump administration in place, the department of education has a new Secretary of Education who is changing policies. In this paper, I will be discussing the new guidelines and changes made by the department of education. These changes are impacting students and institutions.
Title IX
The Trump administration elected Betsy DeVos as the new Secretary of Education. Betsy DeVos is an American businesswoman, who had no experience working in public schools. She has made some shift to the budget and some laws in higher education. DeVos made changes …show more content…

In the previous administration, it stated clearly that campuses should use the preponderance standards, which made it easier for campuses. Another changed was the timing each institution has to complete a Title IX investigation, now institutions do not have a fixed time frame. In the Obama’s administration institutions had 60 days to investigate and complete a case. DeVos new guidelines also let campuses opt to set their own appeals process on who can appeal in regarding responsibility and disciplinary sanctions. In addition, colleges have the power to determine an “informal resolution” if needed as mediation for cases. The Trump administration ended the public-service loan forgiveness program which helps students with their student loans. The administration proposal is to have an income-based loan repayment plans. The new budget will eliminate subsidized loans, according to Kantrowitz “5.7 million students had subsidized loans in the 2016-2017 academic year” (2017). The loan forgiveness program erased student’s loans who went into public service jobs after paying their loan back for ten years. Other programs that lost founding are Supporting Effective Instruction State Grants, 21st Century Community Learning Centers, and Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant programs. The work-study budget was cut in half. Work-study is a federal program that helps students obtain jobs inside the institution they attend. This impacts the students who work on campus and receive work-study benefits to help with their education expenses.
