Poetry creates and descrices situations that forms scenery in our minds while doing so in an artistic faction. Whether it’s the narirator or speaker doing so, we often are given scenerio that leads us to a bigger picture than purly the once we are imagining. Poems like other litterary works tell us a story and so often has an undertone that it not scene at the serface and is up to us as the readers to enjoy what has been painted for us while grasping the true message of the author. Through the 24 line poem we will understand the heartfelt fear of a child’s growth. Although, we are talking aout a bike is that all Pastan is refering to? In Linda Pastan’s To a daughter leaving home, the speaker illistates to the listener of a street with the only two living characters of the child and the parent are learning to ride a bike (I say living character to show how the enviormental factors as a role in this piece.) They are directly related to movements and thoughts of the speaker. “as you wobbled away on two rond wheels, my mouth rounding in surprise when you pulled ahead down the curved path of the park” (5-10) is quite literally the direct action of the child to the speaker. Also “I kept waiting for the thud pf your crash as I sprinted to catch up” (11-14) we are shown the direct relation of the parent looking for the child to fail. Throughout we are listening to metaphors that conect us with an action plainly in the story to one that sympolizes a bigger picture. This is consitant with every line of To a daughter leaving home, everyline that is put into this poem been related to aspect or another. Whether that is related to another line or to the bigger picture beyond the bike riding. These symbols are throughout the story and every last one of them is as inportant as the
