Of all the trials that Hamlet had to conquer during his journey to avenge his father’s death; deciding whether life’s inevitable sufferings were worth living through topped many of his other sub-problems. “To be or not to”: the soliloquy starts the reader with the question of life or death. The motif of death plays an important role in the play because it is a tragedy and it seems as if death is a more reasonable fate than living. Once King Hamlet is murdered by his brother the prosperity of the castle in the Denmark takes a turn for the worse. The talented Beyonce’s has even used Shakespeare’s phrase “to be or not to be” in her the very beginning of her smashing 2006 hit, “Freakum Dress”. Although, when singing the phrase in her song she was not contemplating whether life should be lived or not, nevertheless using the phrase displays the importance of Shakespeare’s Hamlet, the longevity of his work and how it has impacted how people in future eras view Shakespeare’s writings and his everlasting legacy. Not only has Shakespeare’s soliloquy made a stamp on society and is perceived as important to modern society, the play Hamlet has been adapted into many multi-million dollars films that will be rewatched for more decades to come. The Lion King (1994), Strange Brew (1983), The Banquet (2006) and The Bad Sleep Well (1960) are a few movies that are adapted after Shakespeare’s Hamlet. The question remains: Why is Hamlet so prominent in modern day society? Why are high school students forced to read this play that we believe that we do not identify with? Many scholars describe Hamlet as the “Tragic Hero” meaning he is destined to fail or meet death through his or her journey to fulfill their quest or destiny. Typically there is a “Tragic Flaw”, also that contributes to their failure or death. In Hamlet’s case, his tragic flaw is his inability to act on his words. Not taking action to kill Claudius soon enough and pulling a huge facade lead to his unnecessary death.
