The novel To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee is about a family that lives during the 1900’s in a fictional place called Maycomb County. In Chapter 6 of the book, one of the main events of the chapter is Jem, Scout and Dill being chased out of the Radley property. The Radleys are a family that are viewed with fear because they live in a worn out house. They never come out and are aloof towards everyone, and have no interactions with the people of the neighborhood. When the kids get out, Mr. Radley claims that a Negro had been in their property.
In chapter 11 Mrs.Dubose an old sick lady who always sits on the porch of her house one day told Jem and Scout that Atticus isn’t any better than “the “niggers and trash he works for,” and Jem loses his temper. Thus Jem takes Scout baton which he bought for her and destroys Mrs.Dubose’s camellia bushes. When Atticus found out as punishment Mrs.Dubose told Jem must go to her house every day for a month and read to her and Atticus agreed. Scout comes along with Jem everyday and each session they are reading it gets longer. Mrs. Dubose dies a little more than a month after.
The title of the book is To Kill a Mockingbird. The reason it’s called To Kill a Mockingbird is because Atticus says “It’s a sin to kill a Mockingbird”. A Mockingbird is best described as a bird that doesn’t hurt anyone, does not attempt to hurt anyone, sings for enjoyment, tires to help, and has nothing but innocence. To Kill a Mockingbird is a book mainly about the coexistence of good and evil. The book stresses and emphasizes on the exploration of moral nature in humans. There are many themes in this novel including courage, innocence, racism, femininity, etc. However the most prevalent theme in the book is innocence.
