According to the google dictionary, morality is when one is differentiating right from wrong and good or bad. Society tends to turn a blind eye to morality and do what others do instead of what is morally right. In Harper Lee's award winning book To Kill A Mockingbird, Harper Lee, uses the experiences of the kids and interactions among the people of Maycomb to prove that people raised into and taught racism often struggle to see the flaws in their own perspective. Harper Lee incorporates many character descriptions and traits that show how they were raised, how they treat others, and how they are portrayed in their morals. Harper Lee shows this in the scene where Scout is visiting family and she begins to fight with her cousin because he said, “Grandma says it’s bad enough he lets you all run wild, but now he’s turned out to be a nigger-lover we’ll never be able to walk the streets of Maycomb again. He’s ruining the family, that’s what he’s doing”(Lee(Harper) Lee uses this scene to portray how heavily influenced children are by their parents. Scout's cousin, who is Aunt Alexandra's kids, is expressing his racist feelings in this scene. We know from the story that Aunt Alexandra is racist, especially towards Calpurnia. She taught her ideals to him, which made them portray Atticus as a bad person because he was helping the people that he was taught not to like or help. Adding on to that, when people break from society they begin to see flaws in their own perspective as well as others.This is shown after a scout confronts the mob and says “The men were all looking at me, some had their mouths half-open. Because of society's standards, it is hard for many people to see flaws in their opinions. When people begin to understand and experience new opinions, they begin to see the flaws in society's ideals. This is shown when Link Deas interrupts the court case to give his opinion of the matter and stand up for Tom even when nobody else would. Another reason for Maycomb's racism is that, racism in society has been built through generations.”There was indeed a caste system in Maycomb, but to my mind it worked this way: the older citizens, the present generation of people who had lived side by side for years and years, were utterly predictable to one another: they took for granted attitudes, character shadings, even gestures, as having been repeated in each generation and refined by time.”(Leem 149) Harper Lee represents the caste system in Maycomb throughout the story.
