To Kill a Mockingbird Imagine you are living in the 1930’s in a small town where if you do one wrong thing you are assumed to be weird. Harper Lee wrote To Kill a Mockingbird. The setting of this book is Maycomb, Alabama 1930’s. The main characters in the book are Atticus Finch, Jem Finch, and Jean Louise ‘Scout’ Finch. Harper Lee shows the idea of killing a mockingbird is a sin throughout 3 characters which are Tom Robinson, Boo Radley, and a rolly polly. In chapter 10 Atticus brings out the idea that it is a sin to kill a mockingbird while he was talking to Jem.’'Remember it is a sin to kill a mockingbird”(119). Miss Maudie said this to Jem after he asked her while he was reading to her. She brought the idea that mockingbirds don’t cause harm to us. Tom Robinson helped Mayella Ewell, which at first wasn’t a problem, then it backfired on him because she accused him of rape and assault. ‘I’d tip m’ hat when I’d go by, and one day she asked me to come inside the fence and bust up a chiffarobe for her’(255). During the trial, Tom Robinson explained how he would help Mayella with chifforobes. This shows how the “mockingbird” doesn’t do anything besides bring us joy because Tom was helping Mayella when no one else was at home.
