I am reading To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee, and I am on page 42. This book is about a tomboy named Scout and her older brother Jem, who are growing up during the Great Depression in a small town, which is Maycomb, Alabama. They met a boy named Dill, and Scout has started the first grade, but unfortunately for her it’s not what she thought it would be. She also meets her teacher Miss Caroline who spanks her for knowing how to read and defending a friend, Walter Cunningham who is from a poor family who will not take anything they cannot pay back, and Burris Ewell, one of the stinky, homeless, rule breaking Ewells. The town scare is Boo (Arthur) Radley, and everyone is pretty much afraid of the Radleys and their house. Scout kets a big lesson …show more content…

The first reason why I think this is that almost everyone in their town of Maycomb, Alabama is afraid of the Radley’s, especially Boo. According to Jem, Boo is a six and a half foot monster. He also has blood stained hands from all the animals and peoples pets that he kills and eats raw. Lastly, Boo Radley has a huge, gnarly scar right across the front of his face. Also, the entire town has heard many stories about Boo, that may or may not be true. The first story is that you will catch him at night when the moon is out peeping in people’s windows. Another rumor is that all the town’s small and stealthy crimes are committed by Boo. The last thing is that people thought that Boo Radley was terrorizing the entire town with the most disturbing and morbid events, but it was actually it was Crazy Addie. The second major reason why I believe that the three kids will not see Boo Radley is that he is locked up in the house. He is locked up in the house because he is dangerous to the community. When Boo was younger, he participated in some gang activity that got him in trouble. Boo also stabbed his father in the leg with a pair of scissors just because. Lastly, he has gone to jail for some things that he has done. Also, none of the Radleys come outside of the house in general, so it would be pretty difficult to see Boo. If anything, Mrs. Radley would rarely cross the street. The doors to the Radley house are ALWAYS closed, …show more content…

The author has characterized the Ewells as being a dirty and dysfunctional family. The first major characterization of the Ewells is that they are dirty. Burris Ewell is physically dirty. The first day of school, Burris had bugs crawling in his hair and acted like he did not care. When Burris stood up from his desk, Scout said that the back of his neck was dark gray, his hands were rusty, and his fingernails were black. When Miss Caroline asked Burris to bathe himself he was confused and wondered why he needed to bathe, so he probably does not wash himself regularly. The second reason why the Ewells are dirty is because they live like animals. The Ewells do not live in a proper house, they live in the dumpsters, which are not very clean. Also, they don’t have a mother and the father doesn’t really do much to help out. Since the kids do not have anyone to really help them out, so they are basically raising themselves, which is not the best. The second characteristic of the Ewells that I evaluated was that they are a very dysfunctional family. In the town of Maycomb the Ewells are a disgrace and their reputation is not very good. They are considered a disgrace because they do not work at all. Also, they like to bend laws so they do not have to do things and they can do whatever. Lastly, the Ewells live
