Journal #4 I am reading To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee and I am on page 208. So far, this book is about a family that is living during a time when the Jim Crow laws were put in place. The dad in the family is a lawyer and he is defending a black man who is accused of rape. Atticus knows that he won’t win the case, but he is still doing it. The people in the town are criticizing the family. There is a mob who goes to the jail to get the black man, but they leave. My first question is why did the mob leave? I think that one reason the mob left is because Scout humanized Mr. Cunningham. Cunningham was the leader of the group and Scout recognizes him as yells out to him. She says that she knows his son, Walter. She goes through and says that they are in the same grade and she almost beat him up one time. Then Scout tells Mr. Cunningham to say hi to Walter for her. At first Mr. Cunningham was standing straight up and was on a mission. After his face softens and he bends down to Scout and says he will. As he stands up, he tells the mob to move and out and they do. Another possibility that the mob left is that Atticus and the children were physically there. Atticus was staked out at the jail trying to protect Tom. Then the kids came to find Atticus. The mob probably didn’t want to hurt the kids or have the kids see what they were going to do. All of the people being at the jail proved that Tom Robinson was loved by people and some people didn’t want him to die. This might have shown the mob that they shouldn’t kill him. My other question in this journal is why did Jem stand up to Atticus. I think that one reason Jem stood up to Atticus is that he is growing up. Now that Jem is older, he isn’t listening to everything that Atticus is always telling him. He is making decisions on his own. Jem is a teenager now and is deciding that he gets to be more independent. He could have also stood up to Atticus because he cares about Atticus and Scout. He could have wanted to stay and protect Atticus from the mob and make sure that he was going to be ok. Jem wants them to stay safe, because he loves them. These are some good reasons to my two
