Prejudice In Idaho Schools
Would you want your teachers to choose your friends for you? A teacher from Hawthorne Middle School told some students not to hang out with non white students because they are “Bad influences, and bad kids.” In the state of Idaho colored students are treated differently than Caucasian students. First, data from the U.S. Department of Education Office for Civil Rights show that non white students get suspended at a higher rate. Second, Martha Bireda in her book “Cultures in conflict” she discusses how non white students are disciplined more than white students. Third, interviews with students from Hawthorne middle school in Pocatello, Idaho prove that they aren’t treated the same as white students.

In Idaho, students of color are suspended at a higher rate than white students. According to the U.S. Department of Education Office for Civil Rights, forty-nine percent of male students that are suspended in the state of Idaho are colored. While only five percent of male students suspended in Idaho are white. It shows that colored students are suspended more often than white students.
