In the novel To Kill a Mockingbird, an innocent man is convicted of a crime simply because of the color of his skin. Later, he is shot and killed and his death doesn’t even make a ripple in the racist community where he lived. This man was a victim of something called implicit bias. Implicit bias occurs when an individual holds subconscious stereotypes about others who are not the same as them- whether it be race, gender, or sexual orientation. Implicit bias occurs when someone holds subconscious stereotypes about others who are different than them. For example, when someone's family lives in the south and that family has been there since since slavery was around, they might have the tendency to be racist without knowing it. For example, teachers tend to watch male students for misbehavior more than they watch female students for misbehavior. Also in places where males dominate, females are discounted for. For example, football is a male dominant sport so when a girl is seen playing it surprises a lot of people. Another way people show implicit bias is when dealing with sexual orientation. A good example of this is when health providers show bias towards their patients. For example when the doctor or nurse is straight, and their patient is gay, they may not want to help the patient as much as if they were straight. A test was done to show that health providers prefer to have their patients to be the same sexual orientation as they are. The test also showed that if the doctor or nurse was bisexual it could go either way. Implicit bias takes place everyday in just about everyone's life. Having implicit bias isn’t necessarily a bad thing, depending on the level it is taken taken to. There are all different kind of implicit bias such as race, gender, or sexual orientation. Implicit bias is a very hard thing to go without and probably will never go
