Throughout the novel, the theme of walking in someone’s shoes is shown through the characters Jem and Atticus. To begin, throughout the novel Jem has walked in several peoples shoes, mainly because of the influence he received through his father's teachings. The first person in which he walked in their shoes is the ill-tempered Mrs. Dubose. Throughout the journal, Jem has had a very negative view towards Mrs. Dubose. He saw her as a rude racist who had no respect for her father’s efforts to assist Tom Robinson. However, after Jem had finally had enough of her comments towards Atticus, he cut up her garden and ruined all her flowers. Seeing this allowed Jem to look at the world from her perspective which helped him understand why she was so penny-pinching all the time. Furthermore, walking in Mrs. Dubose’s shoes Jem learned not to judge everyone by their cover, and that to really understand why people are the way they are, you have to look at the world in a different way. Much like the way Jem looked at the world in a new way in this situation. Another example from the novel is when Jem walks in Atticus’s shoes. Throughout the entire novel there are many points where Jem has followed in Atticus’s shoes. Anytime Jem looks to make a decision, he thinks about what Atticus would do and say in this certain situation. From the beginning of the story Jem has looked at Atticus as not only his father, but also as his role model. This can be inferred that Jem put himself in Atticus’s shoes, and he understood that Atticus probably didn’t want people knowing of what he did in his past and Scout’s friends knowing he killed a dog. The final character who Jem put himself into their shoes is Walter Cunningham. At the beginning of the novel, the new teacher, Miss Caroline, unintentionally embarrassed Walter in front of the class for not having a lunch during school. She later learned how he was extremely poor, and it was his one of his values not take something that he cannot pay back. During the break at school, Jem saw Walter sulking by himself at a table. Instead of just letting him sit there, Jem put himself in Walter’s shoes and realized how lonely he must be and how embarrassed he must be after the incident during class. As a result, Jem kindly invited Walter over for dinner at his house later that day.
