Doing the Impossible Almost everybody has been under the influence of courage. Courage can make one do the extraordinary. One may try to make the impossible during the presence of courage. What one may not know is that courage comes in many different forms. In the book To Kill a Mockingbird, Harper Lee introduces the reader to a variety of different types of themes such as courage. The theme of courage in the book To Kill a Mockingbird teaches the reader that different types of courage are needed to try to make what may seem impossible, possible as shown through moral, physical, and mental courage. When Atticus and Heck Tate arrive to take care of the mad dog, Scout says, “Jem and I watched our father take the gun and walk out into the middle of the street. He walked quickly (…) We saw his body go rigid. With movements so swift they seemed simultaneous. Atticus’s hand yanked a ball-tipped lever as he brought the gun to his shoulder. The rifle cracked. Tim Johnson leaped, flopped over and crumpled on the sidewalk (…)” (127). This quotation shows the theme of physical courage coming into play as Atticus stands in the middle of the street facing a mad dog. During Aunt Alexandra’s tea party Atticus says to Aunt Alexandra, “They shot him (…) He was running. It was during their exercise period. (…) he broke into a blind raving charge at the fence and started climbing over. Right in front of them (…) they fired a few shots in the air, then to kill. They got him just as he went over the fence” (315). This quotation shows the reader Tom’s great use of the theme of physical courage by doing the impossible by trying to escape. Dubose was in the presence of mental courage. She stopped taking her pain killers because she did not want to die addicted. Later in the book, Scout asks Atticus why he is defending Tom Robinson and Atticus says, “Scout, simply by the nature of the work, every lawyer gets at least one case in his lifetime that affects him personally. This one’s mine, I guess” (101). What one can learn from this quotation is that the theme of mental courage is present in Atticus as he takes on Tom Robinson’s case, by risking the opinions of others about him and if he will win or not. Therefore, the theme of mental courage being a part of the many different types of courage is needed to make what may seem impossible,
