In the 1930´s, the U.S. was going through the great depression. Many parts of the economy in the United States were affected like the stock market, the food trade, and the factories. This caused many problems which were later fixed. Franklin D. Roosevelt saw these problems and realized that they needed to be fixed. He brought about the new deal programs for assisted living. In the novel To Kill A Mockingbird, Harper Lee talks about one of the new deals called the Works Progress Administration.

The rates of unemployment were outstanding. In 1932, a quarter of families in the United States didn't have a single wage earner in their family. In Toledo Ohio, the rate of unemployment was 80%. In Lowell, Massachusetts the rate was even higher; an astounding 90%. There was a shortage of food during the Great Depression because farmers had lost all of their money so they couldn't grow any crops. Many Americans became homeless and ate at soup kitchen to stay alive. In New York, there were 110 known cases of starvation. The West African colony of Cameroon sent 3.77$ in relief funds. The novel takes place during the early 1930’s which is the height of the Great Depression and just as Roosevelt was brought into office. In the book, Atticus is surprised when he hears that there is an enormous amount of food on his back porch. It is left as a thank-you from the black community for Atticus defending Tom Robinson in the trial giving him the best chance possible. Atticus new the times were hard being that it was during the Great Depression, thanked them, but asked them to not give him any more food and keep it for themselves.
