There were many similarities between the film and the novel, To Kill a Mockingbird. The major themes that were consistent throughout the book were all present in the film. The title of the movie and the novel, To Kill a Mockingbird, is based off the point that it is a sin to kill a mockingbird and the theme of innocence. They both demonstrate the themes of racism and equality. The final theme portrayed is that family is what keeps us together. An obvious similarity is the fascination of Arthur Radley and the children. This interest of Jem and Scout with Boo Radley is carried on throughout the book and the film by Boo leaving small gifts in the knothole. One aspect that differs between the novel and the film is Scout’s first day of school. The movie leaves out this scene and the scene where Calpurnia takes Scout and Jem to her church. In the book, the obvious main character is Scout, but in the film it seems as if Atticus is the main character. Another difference is the kids do not make up and play the Boo Radley game. This is a minor detail that was most likely left out because of time purposes. The movie also leaves out when Miss Maudie’s house burnt down. Mrs. Dubose only made a small appearance in the movie, but her role originally from the book was cut out of the movie. Aunt Alexandria, Uncle Jack, and Mr. Dolphus Raymond were all present in the book, but absent in the film. Calpurnia was barely a part of the film and was really only featured as the maid of the house, when in the novel she was more of a motherly figure.
