¨Don't ever think the world owes you anything because it doesn't.¨ Surprisingly, this is a quite legitimate quote which was said in the movie Joy, and pertains to two very audacious books. The books are To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee, and The Boy in the Striped Pajamas by John Boyne. To Kill a Mockingbird is a book based in the 1930s. Moreover, this is about three years before the book The Boy in the Striped Pajamas took place. Although The Boy in the Striped Pajamas has more to do with the Holocaust, both books still have many factors in common. In the beginning, he did not care, or pay attention to things like this. Now, it is more like he has opened his eyes, looked around, and reality hit him in the face. He is starting to see the unfairness of the world. ¨I had a feeling that I shouldn't be here listening to this sinful man who had mixed children and didn't care who knew it, but he was fascinating.¨ (Lee, 201) This is another example of characterization. These literary elements helped the reader picture how much of an oppressive time period this was, and just how people can be so harsh to each other. Therefore, similes that they used helped set the mood and the tone of the story. The characterization helped paint of picture of what that character is like and was very explicit in the way it was presented. Finally, the hyperboles helped get a point across to the reader of the book. Unfortunately, racism has not disappeared today. Racism has been happening throughout America throughout all these years.
