Prompt 14: Did Gatsby Love Daisy Gatsby did not love the Daisy introduced in the book. I do not believe that Gatsby loved Daisy the readers were introduced to. Gatsby loved the Daisy he knew five years ago, before he went to war. Gatsby is now in love with the love that he and Daisy had, in other words, he’s in love with the past, which leads to an obsession. In order to understand Gatsby’s love associated with Daisy, we have to understand how Daisy changed. When Gatsby left for the war he left Daisy behind. He left their relationship behind. With it, Daisy promised to wait for him, but instead she married Tom. Because we know Daisy grew up wealthy, we can infer that she married Tom for that reason. The day of her wedding when he received a letter from Gatsby she had cried, however she still chose Tom. Daisy felt comfort in the money Tom had. She knows that Tom can provide the lifestyle she’s accustomed to and so she marries him and leaves her romance with Gatsby behind. In

He spends years building his career, money, and materials. He gets a huge mansion where he throws large parties. Gatsby hopes to attract Daisy to a party to reunite with her. Gatsby is so infatuated with the past romance with Daisy to the point where he basically loses himself and any relationships with anyone else. His parties are mindless, he doesn’t go out and join anyone and he doesn’t know anyone. Gatsby forms no true relationship with anyone because he’s too busy watching for Daisy. Gatsby becomes so desperate to find Daisy, that he starts pulling people aside and asking them if they know her. When he found out Jordan knew her he invited Nick to the party. Gatsby then formed a relationship with Nick to get closer to Daisy. He even goes as far to ask Nick to invite her over.
