A novel called To Kill A Mockingbird, by Harper Lee. There is a case between an African American named Tom Robinson and a white woman named Mayella Ewell. She accused him of raping her. Tom was always kind to Mayella by helping her with things to do because he felt bad that she was always working. He passed one day and she asked him to get the box on top of the chiffarobe, so he got on the chair and got it then she put her hands around his leg, but she claims that he threw her down and raped her.
In the events of the trials, Mayella Ewell states that she was a victim to choking, beating, and rape. She accuses Tom Robinson of the crime, and eventually leaves the witness stand in hatred and
One reason Tom Robinson is innocent is because the evidence supports his case. Mr. Tate says, “It was her right eye, Mr. Finch. I remember now, she was bunged up on that side of the face,” talking about which side Mayella was beat up on (Lee 225). This would mean that a left handed person would have beat her up and Atticus proves that
In the novel called To kill a Mockingbird, Harper Lee shows how racist people were in 20th century. In the 20th century most of white people wanted to stay away from African Americans. Because they thought they were different and the white people thought they were superior. Atticus mentions in the book that Mr. Bragg, "despises Negroes, won't have one near him" (170). The whites put themselves on a higher pedestal than the blacks.
Even though the jury found Tom Robinson guilty of raping Mayella Ewell, in that matter Atticus Finch, lawyer defending Tom Robinson, said that Tom Robinson was not guilty because he only has one arm and there is no way that Tom Robinson was able to hurt her while Bob Ewell is perfectly fine and
First, Tom Robinson should have been found not guilty because he was right handed. Mayella the victim, was punched in the face on the night of the crime. On page 235, Mr. Heck Tate stated that Mayella had a black eye on her right eye
or anyone that does nothing to harm others. Tom Robinson does nothing to bring harm to anyone, but he is convicted of rape despite only showing generosity towards Mayella Ewell. These accusations are made by Bob Ewell and with each lie he makes it’s the same as shooting Tom like a mockingbird. Bob, Mayella’s father displays a high level of prejudice towards Tom, rejecting the idea that it could be possible that his daughter tried to kiss Tom. Reader’s know, Tom did not rape Mayella and he is too of a kind hearted man to directly blame Mayella for falsely accusing him.
Maycomb’s Mockingbird: Tom Robinson Tom Robinson is arguably the greatest example of a “mockingbird” in Harper Lee’s To Kill a Mockingbird because he never intentionally caused harm, faced a biased community, and died a guilty, forgotten man. Atticus claims mockingbirds are different from other birds by saying “Mockingbirds don’t do one thing but sing their hearts out for us. That’s why it’s a sin to kill a mockingbird.”
Did Tom Robinson really guilty because he raped Miss Mayella Ewell, People might say he is innocent and has nothing to do with her, but I do believe that Tom Robinson is a guy who really committed a crime. As we know about a rape case happened in small town named Maycomb which is located in Alabama and in 1930’s, at this moment in America is having a racism and segregation between white people and black people. Economy and society problem are the biggest issues for everyone who lived in America, both for African- American and White American. People had been unemployed then it was hard to earn a job and money.
Getting accused of a crime based off the color a person shouldn't be a thing. The court case favored the whites and Tom Robinson who is an African American was falsely accused of raping and abusing a young white lady known as Mayella. Harper Lee tries to advocate civil rights in the book To Kill a Mocking Bird by showing a unfair court case, racism, and unfair social justice. There was an unfair court case in the novel To Kill a Mockingbird because they accused a black man known as Tom Robinson of rape without fully proving he did the crime. Tom Robinson's defender Atticus Finch tried proving Tom was innocent in many ways.
Mia Ruan #14230 Mrs. Willshire English 9, Period 5 17 February 2023 Scout began as a young, playful, and innocent girl who was then pushed to fit into societal expectations and go through harsh events such as the Tom Robinson trial which caused her to have the need to blend into Maycomb society and learn to live maturely. Harper Lee in the novel To Kill A Mockingbird through the character of Scout shows how growing up in a problematic community and having to go through rough events at a young age causes children to grow up too fast and lose the innocence of their childhood. Scout is initially reckless, a tomboy, emotionally driven, and spends most of her time playing with boys which to most of the people in Maycomb is not normal behavior
This is especially true when the trial occurs in Alabama. Most townspeople are used to witnessing and participating in racism, so when a case like Tom’s arises it is safe to assume the verdict. Steaming from the racism of the town there is a large bias against Tom. The jury is made up of farmers from the outskirts of town, and the same people who had gone to the jail with the intention of severely hurting Tom. For all these reasons I strongly predict that Tom Robinson will be convicted of raping Mayella Ewell.
In the novel To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee, when Jem realizes how naive he was to believe that the jury would find Tom Robinson innocent, he becomes disillusioned with the people of Maycomb and begins to believe that everyone in the town is corrupt. The novel takes place in Maycomb Alabama, in the 1930s, and is told from the perspective of a young girl named Scout. In Maycomb County, the trial of Tom Robinson, a black man, is going on and he is on trial for his life. He is on trial because he was accused of raping Miss Mayella Ewell, a young white lady of the county. During the trial Scout and Jem, her brother, are watching the trial from the colored balcony and are hearing their father, Atticus, who is also Tom’s lawyer, give his speech
He would have thought that defending his daughter by going to court should raise his family 's stature. If he fails to gain more respect from the community, Bob may have feared about some talks in the black community about white woman making a play for a married black man. Mayella would have been persuaded by Bob or she was maybe forced to believe so. Unfortunately, all of Ewell 's plans backfire. Although verdict says that Tom is guilty, Bob and his daughter are proven liars, and instead of improving his life, Ewell cements his family 's horrible reputation once and for
Bob Ewell could have beaten his own daughter on purpose. He thought his own daughter had a relationship with Tom Robinson. It was the 1930s and relationships with African Americans were illegal at that time. That is reasonable as to why Mayella was beaten. There are marks all around her neck that prove Tom Robinson could not have choked Mayella.
