The book is broken down into three sections. The first section talks about respecting our toddlers and what that can look like in action. The second section talks about how to become a successful parent and caregiver. The final section talks about how we can keep our toddlers safe. In section one, Van der Zande addresses giving children choices and respecting those choices.. Irene Van der Zande included many examples and stories of real life events that you can encounter and how you can handle it. One example would be, “As one father put it, “Never get used to anything once you think you’ve got your kids figured out, they change!”’(Zande, pg. 41) This is talking about how children's interest can change just as easily as they got into it. It’s best to plan ahead for your toddlers day, they will most likely need a change in routine to stay engaged and not become upset due to lack of interest in certain repeatable tasks. These are events that can occur on a daily basis for most parents and children.
