When Tom is convicted, Jem learns that life isn’t fair. Jem is very confident that Atticus will win the case. However, not everything is equal in life. For example, the negroes in the book are not remotely equal to the whites. The whites get everything, while the blacks slave away for the whites every day. In the book, Jem says “It ain’t right, Atticus.” His dad replies “No son, it’s not.” Jem realizes how much torture that is actually going on. He can’t figure out why whites thought they are superior. He even cries because he thinks it is so unfair. It’s not like Tom chooses to be a negro when he was born. Tom is just born with it. He is already given a disadvantage in life. Dolphus Raymond. Scout and Dill realize that the liquid in the brown bag is Coke not liquor. Mr. Raymond deceives everyone by acting like it is liquor. Scout is confused because she thinks he lives a different way of life since he is an alcoholic. Scout asks “Why do you do like you do?” Dolphus replies “I try to give ‘em a reason, you see.” He means he is giving society a reason to thinks he crazy. He has mixed children, and society shuts him out because of it. Scout realizes that Dolphus like negroes. She learns that he isn’t prejudiced and thinks that their society is messed up. Dolphus says “ It’s the way I want to live.” He says this because he despises how everyone treats negroes. He acts like he drinks so that people don’t harass him for having mixed children and a negro wife. He doesn’t want to be bullied for something that is wrong in his opinion. Scout is amazed that he acts differently. She realizes that he is a totally different person than the way he acts. Scout finds out that until you get to know someone, you don’t know how they are personally. Scout thinks he is just a drunk, and that no one thinks he’s a normal person.Yet, he is a regular person with different opinions than others.
