Tomoe Gozen takes place in Japan during 1001 CE - 1500 CE. This time period was marked by the Genpei War and fighting between the clans. Yoshinaka was raised by the Nakahara clan in Kiso after his father was murdered. At this time their government structure was a monarchy because with a lord as a leader, Kiso no Yoshinaka, make the government monarchy. Tomoe Gozen was a rare and exceptional person who became a female samurai hero. The genre of this story is a legend because it is a very well known traditional story that is passed down from generation to generation. There is no actual proof that Tomoe Gozen existed because her story was based on an oral tale that was passed on by blind monks. Tomoe Gozen has a call that includes becoming the best samurai and fighting along the side with Kiso no Yoshinaka. Tomoe Gozen also faces challenges such as overcoming criticism for Being a female samurai, also she had to risk her life to become a samurai. Finally, Tomoe Gozen also had a return which is when she comes home a starts a new life with a family, and at the end she becomes a nun. In conclusion, Tomoe Gozen was a very strong and independent woman who didn't allow gender to affect her choice to become the very best samurai. However, her blind loyalty to her lord led her into some very dangerous situations. Tomoe Gozen was heroic because she put her life on the line, every time she went out to battle. Tomoe Gozen's legend gives hope to all young women because she shows that all women can do anything in her desire that men can do. Finally, Tomoe Gozen's story is an important hero’s journey legend that has been retold for many thousands of year and is an important story of a female hero in Japanese
