In literature, poems are interpreted in several different ways. Tone is a large contribution when reading poems or any other types of literature. As readers, we try to analyze the overall idea of a work, but if we read the work using several different tones, it is also an extrodinary way to discover the many perspectives that author distributes. "Mother to Son" by Langston Hughes utilizes animated, compassionate, and aggressive tones to show the different viewpoints of how a poem can be interpreted. Moreover, Hughes states, “Well, son, I’ll tell you: life ain’t been no crystal stair” (1-2). This can be interpreted as a mother seeing her son going through a severe time. The audience can anticipate that a mother has a compassionate tone towards the son. Also, the reader can hear the empathy in her voice. She knows that life is not an easy road, and she sees that her son is having a rough time. She is empathetic towards him because she has been in his place. The reader can visually see the image of the mother sitting down, talking to her son, and consoling her son. The audience can hear how compassionate she is and understand that there are struggles in life, and life has its ups and downs, but do not give up because it gets better. Another thing Hughes says is, “And sometimes goin’ in the dark where there ain’t been no light “( 12-13). The reader can interpret her compassionate tone as the mother being able to relate to the hard time that her son is having.
