The book has many contradictions which are used to help the party control the general population. George Orwell uses slogan in his novel such as freedom is slavery to enslave the population.

Otto Warmbier was a student from the University of Virginia on a study abroad in North Korea. At a hotel in North Korea he stole a picture off the wall. North Korea quickly took action by taking him hostage and sentencing him to hard labor. Even a small thing such as taking a picture off the wall, showed that the government had a complete overreacting control over people who are in North Korea.

The government controls almost every aspect of peoples’ lives and going against the government results in elimination or torture. Surprisingly, 1984 relates significantly to several of today’s societies and governments, including the United States, Russia, Cuba, and North Korea in ways of mass mind control, electronic intrusion, and endless war. The society in 1984 is very poor now compared to years past because the government is in total control of the people and their income levels. For the government to continue to run in a totalitarian manner, they must find a way to limit the resources that they give to the people; so that the people do not grow richer than the government. The people in 1984 are naive to the fact that the government is destroying their lives while only taking interest in government desire. For a man, in this controlling culture, cannot even think on his own terms but he must line his thoughts to please Big Brother. This idea, that the government controls literally everything, plays out in the society’s amount of wealth and prosperity.
In George orwell’s book, 1984 shows a manipulative government that tries to dehumanize its people. Its dehumanizing effects are seen by the control and limitations of the people 's emotions and pleasures. Yet, how can they be stripped of their humanity if the people still feel remorse, love, and as they grow older their subconscious sees how truly imperfect the government is and they try to keep everything functioning by keeping some rules intact and that 's what being human is really about being perfect in the most imperfect way. The way that the history comes into place in this novel and how the character see it shows that rebellion is part of the human nature. Dystopian novels such as Brave New World by Aldous Huxley and 1984 by George Orwell depict these potential totalitarian ruled societies and attempt to act as cautionary tales for future generations. Through their novels, both authors have shown how government control and new technology could limit the freedoms of the individual people.
