Toussaint Louverture
Best known as the leader of the Haitian revolution Francois-Dominique Toussaint Louverture was well known as Louverture or Toussaint Breda. The military and political acumen who saved the gains of the first black insurrection and being the first black plantation slave to accomplish what he did being born in a time of unrest and strong prejudice.
Toussaint Louverture was born in 1743 May 20 (there are contradictory accounts and evidence about this date) in Saint Dominique which is now modern Haiti. He was born into slavery on a plantation under the ownership of Count de Breda but was originally from royal family, his father was Gaou Guinou, a younger son of the king of Allada a West African historical kingdom located in modern day Benin who was captured in war and sold into slavery. It was later when Toussaint could no longer deny how brutal the whites were, he and the slaves from his plantation joined Blassou revolution where he became Blassou’s assistant and later put in charge of a column that operated in the North colony. In 1791 October 30, just after Toussaint became a free man, the slaves started a massive revolt against the whites in the French colony of Saint Dominique modern day Haiti. Toussaint chose to act as the doctor of the black slaves or army instead of joining them in their massacre as he believed that god wanted slavery to be abolished and called him to lead Haiti people out of slavery. In December 1791 he was involved in the negotiations between the slaves and the French governor, the revolt was eventually put to an end, and the slaves were defeated and put back to
