The relationship that a child has with their father is one of the most important relationships that they have to maintain in their whole lifetime. Janine Ungvarsky’s article Toxic Relationships introduces the idea that “Psychologists define toxic relationships as those in which one person seeks to control the relationship by making the other person feel bad. The toxic person may make fun of the other person, belittling his or her interests, friends, or family” (Ungvarsky, 2023). In a toxic relationship one person aims to hurt the other person mentally. Psychopathology is the scientific study of mental illnesses or diseases. An inter-generational influence is the influence of adults on other adults throughout the different generations of a family. If a child is surrounded by parents that do not agree with some of the decisions that their kid is making it could damage the kid into thinking that what they are doing is wrong. If the kid wants to be part of a certain group that wouldn't be acceptable in the parents' time they may feel wrong with themselves if their parents are slandering their personal choices. In both Toxic Relationships by Janine Ungvarsky and Father-Child Relationship by Vicky Phares and Grace Cho it is shown how harmful bad and toxic relationships can be to somebody. She falls in love with Romeo but cannot tell her father because Romeo is a Montague.“God's Bread! It makes me mad… still my care hath been to have her matched… and then to have a wretched puling fool, a whining mammet, in her fortunes tender, to answer ‘I’ll not wed,’ ‘I cannot love,’ ‘I am to young,’ ‘I pray you, pardon me’” (Shakespeare, 202). Juliet's father is emphasizing that he found his daughter the perfect man that any girl would want to date and that she is just complaining. He calls her a wretched, whimpering fool, and a whining puppet. He does not let Juliet have her own feelings which cause their father-daughter relationship to be ruined. Melinda's relationship is ruined with her father because he doesn't listen to anything Melinda tries to tell him. He doesn't let her voice her opinion or tell him anything that she is feeling. Melinda's father does not not understand the root causes of her bad attitude and grade drops and assumes that it is because of bad influences. Melinda's father emphasizes her bad attitude by claiming “I don’t know where you picked up that slacker attitude, but you certainly didn't learn it at home. Probably from the bad influences up here” (Anderson, 116). Melinda's dad is assuming that Melinda's drop in performance is due to bad influences in school. He does not know the real truth because he does not allow Melinda to voice her
