Bullets were flying everywhere and Charley just about couldn’t take it. Charley was scared out of his mind. He was already questioning his decision to join the war and the first battle wasn't even over yet. After this battle Charley was so shocked that he vomited. Dally might have been cowardly in some parts of The Outsiders ,but his heroic acts to Ponyboy, Johnny, and other members of the gang show that he died a hero. First of all, Dally died a hero because he helped Ponyboy and Johnny hide from the crime that they committed even though he took a risk in doing so. Dally gave information to two wanted criminals on where to hide, and the police were not as nice to Greasers as they were to Socs.
This novel is written and told by Joseph Plumb Martin himself. In these first hand accounts, he tells of the obstacles him and the numerous other soldiers faced during the American Revolutionary War. Along with speaking of the hardships faced, Martin also provides background of not only his life, but what the country was like during this time. Martin speaks of in the year 1774, he didn’t want to have any ties to the war, he felt that he’d be safer at home. Mr. Martin describes his memories from a much later stage in his life at the age of 70 in the year 1830. This is the tales of the crippling weather conditions, terrible living conditions and war stories told by a young enlisted soldier during the war. Mr. Martin was born to a preacher and his wife in 1760 in western Massachusetts. The story begins when he was just a young boy who was sent to live with his grandparents on a farm.
The time when I was brave is when I save my friend. My friend would always wonder off with his bike and I would have to find him and see if he is ok. Then when I found him and later a car came by from a distance. I ran into my friend and grabbed him with his bike and ran back to the sidewalk. By showing bravery, I helped save my friends life because he was very close to losing it.
Charley wanted to become a man so badly and so quickly, that he was blindsided by the factors of what it would really be like, living life in the army. Charley was 15 years old entering the war. But he knew they wouldn’t take him if he was underaged, so he lied about his age just to be in the army. So he gets there, and he doesn't receive a uniform just yet, which he thought he would. And he writes letters to his mother telling what it is like, being a soldier.
How would you feel if you were recruited as a soldier during war? Since 2001, the participation of child soldiers has been reported in 21 on-going or recent armed conflicts in almost every region of the world. The importance of this is portrayed in Ishmael Beah’s memoir A Long Way Gone. The author believes that innocent kids should not be selected to fight as soldiers, lose their innocence killing people, witnessing violent scenes and suffer because of war.
Flashbacks of him in the war, him seeing his friends being killed, him starving and having to fight and kill people. Instead of running and working and having a family, CHarley is alone by himself with no family, and no kids. He can’t run, because he has a limp and was hurt during the war. Charley is in pain and wants to die.
As the author is told he is being drafted to war, he becomes very upset. He clearly does not want to be part of it. His initial says, “I was too good for this war. Too smart, too compassionate, too everything. It couldn’t happen.
The soldiers the books talk about are both from the north, so we never truly understand what the southern soldiers are thinking or going through. Henry and Charley were both volunteers for the union. The soldiers, both had injuries, even though they got them in different ways they still had injuries while being it the union army. Where there are so many resemblances that this is what it is like for most of the soldiers.
The classic children’s story, The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, tells a tale of a young girl named Dorothy who finds herself in an unknown land after being carried up and away by a cyclone. I don’t really enjoy picking fights, or committing any acts of violence. Truthfully, if I got into any type of conflict, my lanky body would probably give up on me halfway. That’s what my wife told me after I said I was going to be joining the US armed forces. “Mark, are you an idiot? You can’t even walk without limping, how will you serve our country?!”
