Everyday people will end up using technology, whether it be their phone of their computer. The use of technology has been relied on heavily in the past years for business and communication in different areas of societies. In doing so, technology has been accepted in today’s society to the point where it is almost necessary to understand the concepts and effects of it. The problem that arises is that people do not truly understand the technology that surrounds them and how it works. This unawareness of how technology works and how it affects people’s lives leads to people being taken advantage in different aspects of society like politics and consumerism as well as being weary of hackers. The two biggest issues that have surrounded technology recently is the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) and the Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA). A majority of the public do not know about the TPP, but it is a part of politics that affects many people. The TPP, in concerns to technology, will allow for Internet Service Providers (ISPs) like AT&T and Comcast as well as the government to have complete control over the internet and the data that transfers throughout it. A big part of the ISP control is that they would have to give the government the names of people who were thought to break copyright laws. A majority of society would think that it would be okay to stop people from breaking copyright laws, but what they do not know is how severely the TPP encroaches on personal freedom and privacy. Jeremy Malcom from the Electronic Frontier Foundation shares these views on the TPP as well and he has spent time reviewing the TPP extensively. In doing so, Malcom has concluded that, “There are no parts of this agreement that are positively good for users.” (Malcom). Even professionals in the technology field believe that the TPP is terrible and, yet, people still do not know the truth about it. This goes the same for SOPA as well. Schools all over the world have computers and avidly use them as tools for education. The problem that arises is due to the officials that are making the technology policies for education. Francesc Pedró from UNESCO goes into detail about these policies and states that, “it is striking how little is known about the effects of using technology on the quality of school education.” (Pedró). This is a product of the officials not knowing about the technology they are implementing which may lead to a huge backfire in the quality of education. Even though technology can play a phenomenal role in education, people need to understand how it affects the students and systems that use it. Blindly putting technology into something as fragile as education can lead to negative effects in the future. This issue in education does not stop at the policy makers either, but also the teachers that are using the technology in their classrooms. Pedró furthers his investigation by discussing the teacher side of the issue stating, “[The] final responsibility of technology adoption has always been, and will continue to be, in the hands of each individual teachers.” (Pedró). No matter how many policies are being put into the system, it lastly falls on the teacher being able to appropriately apply the technology to the classroom.
