Those who argue that transgender Americans are abnormal, unfit for workplaces and a disgrace for families do so in an effort to block their civil rights in the workplace, in public places, and in health care. They see transgender people as ones to be pitied and shunned. In this environment; transitioning on the job is career suicide, medical treatments and surgery to bring a person’s body with that person’s gender identity is available only to a few who pay out of pocket. Coming out of the closet often means living as a deviant.
Being transgender today remains unfairly and needlessly hard. But it is far from hopeless. More Americans who are transgender are transitioning openly, encouraging a civil rights movement that has unique obstacles even as gays and lesbians have solid gains in their struggle for equality. Those coming out now are doing so with care , realizing that while some tolerance is expanding, discriminatory policy and unfriendly attitudes remain widespread. …show more content…

There was the actress Laverne Cox, Chelsea Manning (the Army whistle blower) and recently, Bruce Jenner, a gold medal Olympian. Their stories have brought attention to the difficulties which a segment of our population that continue to face. The hard lives of transgender people is unknown to most Americans. Transgenders are a diverse community with many experiences. They should have the right to come out in a nation where stories of compassion and support vastly outnumber those that end with a suicide note. The view is changing but it is gradual. Careers, dreams and lives are put on hold. They balance their world with the real world. Transgender people are slowly gaining the same rights as cisgender
