This handbook contains the shared vision and agenda of providing guidance for the staff, volunteers and coaches involved in DUET- Developing Uniquely Empowered Teenagers. The purpose of the DUET handbook is to propel the paradox of servant leadership, expounding on how one can be both a servant and a leader. DUET, an acronym for Developing Uniquely Empowered Teenagers, is a faith based ministry. Created by Courtney Weston, DUET strives to empower teens ages 13-19 to excel in whatever unique gift God has equipped them with.
Jessica put it rightly when she gives an example of the game where parents started fighting with each other over a children's game. All of this leads to making children feel like that the sport is more sort of a job where they have to prove themselves rather than something they could
Do you ever wish that your middle school had sports teams? Participating in sports in middle school is very important for numerous reasons. When it comes to teenagers being active and being a part of a team is important. This is why middle schools should have sports teams.
The children lose hope when they can't meet the high standards set by their parents and coaches. Jessica gives a great example in her writing about the parents who started to quarrel during the game about some silly stuff. They started yelling and throwing insults at each other just like immature children. They forgot that was just a children’s game. Statsky is right in saying that this much involvement of parents, the physical energy demanded by the coaches and the game make children think of sports as a job and not as something that you can enjoy.
This notion is supported by Dr. Daniel Gould, who believes that “Children who participate in sports have increased educational aspirations, closer ties to school and increased occupational aspirations in youth” (1). People against the funding of high school sports think that parents and society are placing more emphasis than ever before and, “[P]ressures athletic personnel to deviate on winning from the athlete- centered educational and personal development mission” (Gould 1). However, athletes strive to do better in class. Michael Lorenc, a high school basketball coach believes that “those who seem to have an overwhelming schedule where they’re playing maybe multiple sports, and high academic schedules, they tend to do better than those who don’t do anything extracurricularly” (Gray). Balancing sports and school makes athletes put more effort into keeping up grades while playing the sport they love.
When kids decide to specialize in a sport they are deciding to pour most or all their energy into said sport. When they do this they will not have the time or energy to give any other sport their attention, and that could lead to some problems. First off, there could be another sport that they would enjoy more but never got the chance to try. Kids should not be specializing in one sport, they should be going trying new things and later decide what they liked. Now some people may say that kids may have a definite passion for a particular sport at a young age and specializing would really increase their skill.
This is where many parents do not understand the true meaning of sports. Pressuring and sacrificing their kid’s childhood with constant practice and focus on their sport would be so tiring that the child would more than likely get tired with the sport. To conclude, sacrificing a kid’s childhood away from overwhelming pressure from their parents is an unnecessary thing that no one should ever have to go
More and more often you hear about young kids quitting sports due to being burned out. Julianna W. Miner reports, “According to a poll from the National Alliance for Youth Sports, around 70 percent of kids in the United States stop playing organized sports by the age of 13 because ’it’s just not fun anymore’”(Washington Post). This can be caused by the fact that parents are playing select ball at early ages such as 7 or 8 years old. Playing competitively in any sport at such can early age can take a huge emotional toll on kids. At such an early age, kids should play these sports for fun and entertainment, not competition.
High school is one thing that a vast majority of people have experienced. Several of those who are acquainted with the high school experience are well aware of how terrible it can be; it is "the mouth of a great demon biting and chewing and smushing people in the face" (Jesse Andrews) leaving us in ruins after we graduate. It is a place to put awkward teenagers that adults do not want to deal with. It is a place where individuality and dissent are encouraged, but also crushed. High school is simply irrelevant and overwhelming and it must be reevaluated.
Young people today are being irresponsible by delaying the rituals of adult life, because they are wasting their precious young years by delaying being responsible for themselves, taking care of themselves, and starting their own life for example, their own family. Young people today are lazy and many are not able to support themselves, because they depend on someone else to take care of them. But young people should understand that they are going to have to be on their own one day, and will not know how sustain themselves if they don’t start learning how to become an independent. Young people today take a longer time to mature and take on the responsibilities of an adult such as getting a good job, and moving out of their parent’s house,
In recent years studies have found that some kids have been steering away from sports. Numbers in kids playing sports has gone down nearly 4 percent from 2009, according to a widely cited survey by the Sports and Fitness Industry Association. Total sports played have plummeted by nearly 10 percent. People were curious why this was happening, so studies were conducted to find out. The researchers found out that there have been added pressures by three main sources, parents, coaches, and self pressure.
Forcing a child into doing a sport can damage a child’s well-being, physical-being and can cause them to not have any interest in the sport. Research has shown that children that are forced into sports can be affected negatively in a physically, mentally, and emotionally way due to parent performance expectations. Sports is an important aspect of American culture. Some parents value sports more than they do
The transition from Primary school to Post-Primary school is a difficult time for anyone involved. It is one of the most drastic changes that students will ever encounter in the educational career. The transition is typically filled with anticipation and anxiety about homework, teachers, peers, academic rigor, school rules, getting lost, and many more factors. For the typical student, it is a whirlwind of emotion and anxiety. For students with special needs, these worries become even more prominent for the pupils and their parents.
It is an honour to stand before you and have the chance to speak. Today, I want to talk about being a teenager. Being a teenager isn’t really easy. It is hard, harder than you can imagine. It can be confusing and frustrating.
