Children often use a transitional object to self soothe in stressful or new situations. Often the transitional object is a blanket or stuffed animal. The attachment to these objects usually start at around eight or nine months. The attachments that children make with these objects are usually extremely important. Personally, I never had a transitional object but my son has a yellow blankie that he is strongly attached to. His great aunt made it for him before he was born and I began using it as a travel blanket at around six months.
