Hamlet’s Hesitance The tragedy of Hamlet centers on the ignorance of protagonist, Hamlet, and his inability to carry out his actions. His incompetence to complete his thoughts eventually leads to his tragic downfall. Hamlets situation entails one in which he thinks carefully and thoroughly through his actions. He becomes “trapped” in many ways under the surveillance of Rosencrantz and Guildenstern, as well as the continuous spying done by Claudius and Polonius. Everyone in a certain way becomes “trapped” in their life. For example, through work, relationships, or mental conditions. How far one can become trapped can influence the choices they make. One can find themselves trapped in their workplace or job, at home with family, or within one’s own mind, trying to figure out the troubles laying around. Hamlet remains trapped within his own mind, as well as with his family who eagerly try to figure out his troubles. These troubles stem from Claudius killing Hamlet Sr., and Hamlets “eagerness” to avenge his father’s death. The nature of man’s reality of feeling trapped leads to actions deeming one as crazy, or act in a way not normal to the usual self. Hamlet directly reflects these actions but not based off his suspicions of a crazy person. Hamlet makes himself appear crazy with a goal in mind, to deceive Gertrude, Claudius, and Polonius. Hamlet exercises his fake craziness exclaiming, “How strange or odd some'er I bear myself as I perchance hereafter shall think meet to put an antic disposition on” (1.5.190-192). Hamlet says these words during the beginning of the tragedy after Hamlet Sr. provides Hamlet proof of Claudius killing his father. Hamlet warns his friends he will put “an antic disposition” on them, pretending he will portray himself as a mad man. Before he finds out his father has died, Hamlet has no legitimate reason to feel
