As I was reading Mockingbird I noticed the trend of Mrs. Johnson Caitlin’s classroom teacher send Caitlin to Mrs. Brook when she was getting frustrated with Caitlin. One example was when it was time to pick an animal for group projects and Caitlin said the heart. Mrs. Johnson tried to communicate that she wanted Caitlin to pick an animal. After the back and fourth it switches to Mrs. Brook saying, “you’re early.” Caitlin’s response was, “I know. I told Mrs. Johnson that but she said it was time to see you NOW. She is having trouble Getting It today” (Erskine, 2011, p.40). Instead of trying to resolve the problem in front of the entire class, Mrs. Johnson should have taken Caitlin aside and resolved it privately. Also, Mrs. Johnson did not change …show more content…

Instead she said, “I’d like you to be in a real group. How about joining Emma and Brianna?” (Erskine, 2011, p.39). She asked Caitlin a question and when she was not happy with her answer she got frustrated and sent her out of the classroom. I learned that not all teachers know how to meet the needs of their students. I also learned that if you are going to have an inclusive classroom you need to be educated on each one of your students and their need so they can be met. Another thing I learned is that teachers play a huge role in their student’s life and they expect you to show up. When Mrs. Brook had to leave and be with her sister that disrupted Caitlin time at school because she didn’t have the safe haven. Knowing she would be gone for a long period of time Mrs. Brook made phone calls to her students to check in. It also means a lot to your students knowing their teacher is thinking about them. In the book it says, “Mrs. Brook says she just wants to talk to me personally and see how I’m doing because she can’t come back to school for a few more days” (Erskine, 2011, p.153). From the language Caitlin is using it conveys she feels important and special that she is getting the call from Mrs.
