The United States of America as they stand today are a result of the evolution of the frameworks our founding fathers set in to place long ago. Among them were the Articles of Confederation, the Virginia and New Jersey plans, the Federalist Papers, and the Constitution. Beginning with the original frame work for the government of the United States, the Articles of Confederation, established in 1781, formed a firm league of friendship among the states, instead of a government for the people (Dye, Gaddie 66). The United States fared well under the Articles of Confederation. With success in gaining independence from Great Britain, gaining France as an ally and establishing a viable peace.
Not everything in life is equal. Many places such as the United States say that the people follow what they believe or the system treats people equally, but that is not the case. These flaws are called hypocrisies. These Hipocrasies are presented in the story To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee. They help shape the story and create the characters.
A conflict can be defined as a serious disagreement or argument. In the novel, To Kill A Mockingbird written by Harper Lee, there are many minor conflicts that occur. Some examples would be Miss Maudie Atkinson's house catching fire and Tim Johnson being put down. However, the major conflict of the novel is Tom Robinson's court case. It is important to understand that while Boo appears to be a strange, crazy neighbor to the townspeople, Scout, Jem and Dill seem to be intrigued by Boo because of the town's rumors about him.
Limitations “Maycomb County had recently been told that it had nothing to fear but fear itself”(Lee 6). The Civil Rights movement of the 1960s was a time of adversity between the blacks and the whites. It has impacted America forever in more ways than one. Racial injustice was caused by widespread stereotypes about blacks that were ingrained into the minds of the whites. Harper Lee was able to provide an excellent example of how racial injustice actually was in the 1930s.
Hair- Case #1 The year was 1985 in Springfield, Massachusetts, a 78 year old women had been sexually assaulted and burglarized allegedly by George Perrot, who was 17 at the time of the incident. There was a single hair found on the bed sheet of the victim that could have been from the suspects head or pubic area due to the sexual assault. Lab analysis was done only looking at the medulla, the cortex, and the cuticle of the hair. In court, the FBI agent proclaimed “The hair found on the sheet exhibits all the same microscopic hair arranged in the same way as the characteristics present in the known hair from Perrot”.
Racial Issues and How it Affects the Everyday Life Racial issues are brought up constantly in To Kill A Mockingbird by Harper Lee. One area that race issues affect is education, and those who are black have harder times in school due to a lot of different factors. To Kill a Mocking Bird is a story about how a black man in Mackome Alabama was accused of raping a white woman. During this time period, society already lived by white supremacy and people of color did not have nearly the same amount of rights as whites. Tom was accused of raping Mayelle Ewell and hated amongst his community, although they had no real evidence to support this claim.
No society is perfect. As much as we strive for the best, it is impossible to be impeccable. Both authors and musicians lean towards writing about events that are affecting them directly, or the society at which they live in. That being said, the literature and media at which many produce, highlight key social issues that individuals are faced with everyday. Literature and forms of media; including music reflect society's flaws in hopes to make the culture aware of the damages they are bringing on to others.
The novel To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee takes place in the town of Maycomb, Alabama during the Great Depression. The author Lee demonstrates some major themes such as social inequality, intolerance, education, legal justice and bravery through this character. The title To Kill a Mockingbird symbolises innocence where Lee explores this through the eyes of Jem and Scout who are kids of Atticus Finch. He is one of the most honest, patient, kind, fair, respected and admired men in Maycomb during the Great Depression. Atticus is known for his moral character throughout the book.
In Maycomb, there are 3 moral issues, gender, social class, and race. To Kill A Mockingbird by Harper Lee, takes place in a southern town in the 1930s. It follows two kids, Scout and Jem, and their summer adventures. It also follow Atticus Finch’s trial with Tom Robinson and the racist town. The novel focuses on 3 main issues, social class, gender, and race, but out of those 3 the most important one is race because of the towns views on colored people and the way they are treated.
In contrast to the black community of Maycomb that shun racist beliefs, the white community instead shun un-racist ideas and encourage racist concepts. To Kill a Mockingbird sheds light on these topics to enhance the audiences understanding of how racism was able to fester in the white society of the Southern States of
Sadly, the seeds planted by infringing upon the basic human right of equality have grown today into pressing social issues only enhanced and continued by going unacknowledged by those who have the needed power to change it. In To Kill a Mockingbird, a group of missionary ladies are having a meeting at the Finch home in efforts to help a tribe in Africa called the Mrunas; one lady describes to Scout her blessings in comparison to the deplorable Mrunas: “you are a fortunate girl. You live in a Christian home with Christian folks in a Christian town. Out there [...] there’s nothing but sin and squalor [...] Not a white person will go near them but that saintly J Grimes Everett” (Lee 309).
Harper Lee touches upon many social issues in To Kill a Mockingbird. Among these issues is the matter of racism in America during the 1930s. This novel focused on the issue of racism through the case of Tom Robinson which conveyed the strong hostility towards African-Americans in Maycomb, Alabama. Other various occasions in the novel exhibit racism’s potential and influence in this country including Aunt Alexandra's disapproval of Calpurnia, and Mr. Dolphus Raymond’s hidden life. Through the results of these instances, Harper Lee shed a new light on racism and how it will always persist in America.
