Discrimination Imagine a math class. The teacher of this class has a son. The teacher always helps his son and his friends with their math work. The son and his friends have an A due to all the help the teacher gives. The teacher doesn't help the rest of the class because they aren't friends with his son. The kids aren’t as likely to do well in math as the teacher's son and his friends. This idea is portrayed in Trevor Noah's memoir, Born a Crime. Throughout the book, Noah shows memories of being treated differently than others and South Africa's system of segregation. Throughout Born a Crime, Trevor Noah shows how discrimination can tear down individuals and communities.

In the book, Trevor shows us this by telling us about the classes in his school. “‘Yeah, but that class is… those kids are gonna hold you back. You want to be in the smart class’” (59). This quote is Trevor’s teacher telling him that he should be in A class which is full of white kids and that the B class which is made up of black kids will hold him back. This discrimination in schools is what brings communities and individuals. Making the A class the smart class just because it is made of white kids causes the kids in the B class to feel inferior and dumber. Trevor remembers feeling separated from the rest of the world because he was colored. For example “In Soweto I was the only white kid in the black township. In Eden park I was the only mixed kid in the colored area. In Highlands North I was the only black kid in the white suburb” (151). This is the discrimination Trevor faced in the different places he lived in. He was always left out from the mostly black or mostly white areas.
