Other Trinitarian theologies fail as the language of our Trinitarian doctrine is changed or adjusted to modernize and culturize the Trinity to our present society. The early Trinitarian Creeds can appear patristic and archaic in style, so a renovation to the Trinitarian Creed should not necessarily be considered taboo or heretical. In spite of nearly two millennia of academic and social achievement, humankind’s vocabulary, capacity for reason, and theology really has yet to compose a creed, which improves upon the language of the historic creeds without detracting from a Trinitarian framework. The difficulty of such a task requires the new theology to maintain orthodoxy in both the ontic and the noetic aspects of the Trinity.

Scripture, Christian creeds, and church history form a doctrinal scaffolding inside of which we are free to speculate about God. Throughout Judaic history, Rabbis follow a similar disciple when they perform Midrash. One rabbinic illustration for this discipline of studying sacred theology uses Noah’s ark as an anecdote. In Genesis 5:14-16, Scripture provides the dimensions of the ark; however, it does not specify the design of the ark. According to these ancient rabbis, one can freely speculate the countless possibilities of architectural design of the ark as long as they remain true to the dimensions listed in Scripture. The Christian theology should follow the same regulations. Scripture and creeds form generous boundaries inside of which we are free to speculate about God. If the focus remains only on the constriction the boundaries, then it will lead to theological claustrophobia.
