Religion is a timeless human concept that incorporates divine influence. Following a religion provides people with a sense of purpose, individually or as a collective community. This sense of purpose comes with following the belief system of a person’s chosen religion, and enacting their lives in accordance with religious teachings. Religion by definition ties people together, and continues to do so today, with religions such as Christianity retaining old teachings but adapting them to a modern setting. Christianity is a sematic religion that is followed by adherents of variant groups of the faith. The doctrine of the Trinity states that God is comprised of three entities. These entities are described as God the Father, Jesus the Son and the Holy Spirit. However, several Christian variant religions oppose this Trinitarian notion, as they believe it is worshipping more than one God. This is seen to be defiance against monotheism, and therefore is rejected amongst some sects of Christianity. However, for the majority of variants that do recognise the trinity as one being, this understanding constitutes the basis of Christianity as it acknowledges Jesus as the Son of God. Belief in the Trinitarian doctrine also encompasses the concept that God is omnipresent, omnipotent and omniscient. By this definition adherents believe that God is always present everywhere at once, is all-powerful and has complete knowledge of the world and beyond. Known as the simplest prayer in the world, the sign of the cross demonstrates this Trinitarian view with, “In the name of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit”. Through this the adherent acknowledges that there are greater beings, which in turn provide the adherent with a purpose. By believing in the Trinity, Christians are able to comprehend the power of God and therefore have faith in His works. As an active religion, Christianity constantly provides its follower’s with a sense of belonging. This religion provides adherents with an explanation of origin, purpose and life thereafter. The adherents place in the world allows them to be enriched with a sense of purpose. As a community it is understood that everyone is a child of God, and descends from Adam and Eve. This belief gives an origin to the adherent’s story, and thus a starting point of belief. The Old Testament of the Holy Bible contains the origin story of humanity, however it does not talk of the origin of Christian faith. This development comes later, as shown in the New Testament after the birth, life, death and resurrection of Jesus the Son of God. The New Testament is a documentation of Jesus, teachings and consequently the beginning of Christianity. From this section within the Christian sacred text known as the Bible, the adherent is given guidelines regarding how to live their life. The 8 Beatitudes in the Gospel of Matthew verse 5, lines 3 to 10, specifically illustrate this.
