The ancient city, Alba Longa was defeated around middle of the 7th century BC by Rome, among the costly war fought between 2 sides, the final victory was determined by duels between triples of the Horatii from Rome and the triples of the Curiatii from Alba. The text of Livy is, however, greatly distinct apart the movie, as the characteristics of each character were manipulated in the film, idea of gender equality was heavily display in the film whereas text seems like to display another completely different story, and also the main character of the movie, Publius, was put on halo effects so that everything he did was right and appropriate contrasting how history was written in Livy’s text. For example, the king of Rome, Tullus Hostilius, was known for his warlike character and he would sacrifice his citizens to accomplish his greed as he provoke and declare wars upon countries with no good reasons and it was display vividly in the text, but in the film, he is shown as this elderly father like character who worries about his people and was asking god for a solution of peace between his city and Alba. At last, war ended as Publius defeats triples of Alba and Alba becomes vassal state in film, but according to the text the peace didn’t last due to the will of dictator and eventually war outbreaks again. As a contrast, the king of Alba, Mettus, display in film as a rude disrespectful person when he draws his sword at the meeting towards the Roman king, which is very disrespectful. As he plays the role of villain in this movie, in the text, after Rome declared war upon his state, with not knowing what had happened, immediately first thing he does was to apologies to Rome for whatever reason that him and his people might offend the Romans hoping to stop the war, which could not achieve due to the ambition of Roman king of willing of rule over Alba. Publius was charged for death but eventually got out of it. As a man who live in one of ancient patrilineality society, he was easily forgive, women's’ rights were heavily discriminated and in comparison with the film we see that it was different: Romen women have right to end their life like all the Romen men the way they want, and this is probably what the director tried to deliver by changing Publius’s sister’s death. Although it was kind for director to did his film the way it is, it could have impact and made people think about what it is like in patrilineality society and force people to see a different side of Publius and Romen men if the movie restore what actually happened and it is not educating people what the actual social viewpoints were
