Trust vs. Mistrust Erik Erikson’s first stage of the childhood development stages is Trust vs. Mistrust. These stages take place from the very first moments of life, and end around 18 months of age. This stage is all about how infants learn how to trust others, focusing on the ones that provide them with their basic needs. In this stage, it’s absolutely crucial that babies and early toddlers learn a secure sense of security during this stage. They need to feel this sense of security, because they crave feeling safe in a world that is full of threats and dangers. Guilt. This stage takes place at age three until the age of five. In this stage, children are learning new things in school. Then after they’re learned in school, the children can apply the lessons it in their daily lives. This stage also has the name of the “Play Age” stage. This is where children can experiment with new things, and become adventurous with their surroundings, without being scared of the punishment or rejection that may follow from it. Inferiority. This stage occurs around the age of five years old, and ends at stage twelve. At this stage, insecurity starts to creep in. This is when children and early teens start to become insecure when things don’t go as planned. Growing up, most people have a desire to follow in their friend’s footsteps and be noticed as “cool”. This in itself will boast their self-confidence. However, if they fail to do a task, or don’t complete it right, they become insecure or inferior to their peers around. If a child is attempting to complete or learn a certain task, and he or she fails at it, this sets them up for feelings of disappointment. Disappointment or discouragement can be toxic. In this stage, it is common to find some blocks inhibiting a child’s growth into a teen. These factors can range from their ethnicities, certain quirks about them, disabilities, or minor other things.
